Many people think of?Massachusetts as an urban state dominated by Boston, but nearly half of the towns in the Commonwealth are rural (with less than 500 people per square mile). These 170 communities are home to more than 830,000 people.
While most of these towns are located in the four western counties (Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden, and Hampshire), many others are in the central part of the state. There also are rural towns on the North Shore, Cape, and Islands. A full list of these towns is shown below:
